Your Questions Answered
Sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, eye trauma, the sudden appearance of flashes, numerous spots or a shadow in your field of vision, double vision (diplopia), and chemical exposure should be assessed as soon as possible. If a foreign body enters the eye, rinse it with saline solution and avoid rubbing it.
Avoid rubbing the eye or trying to remove the object with anything. If the discomfort does not resolve after gently rinsing with clean water, or if you have pain, redness, watering or blurred vision, you should have an ophthalmic examination.
A superficial foreign body can usually be removed during the appointment using anaesthetic eye drops and specialist instruments. We first need to locate it and rule out any deeper injury.
Rinse the eye immediately with plenty of water and continue rinsing while you seek medical attention. Do not wait for symptoms to appear, especially after exposure to bleach, cleaning products or other strong chemicals.
Go directly to a hospital emergency department for a penetrating wound, an embedded object, a high-velocity impact, a serious chemical burn or any loss of vision following an eye injury.
