Dr. Bernardo Muel Rodríguez

Hello and welcome. I am Dr Bernardo Muel, a Specialist in Ophthalmology, and I would like to tell you a little more about my career and the philosophy that guides my day-to-day work in the clinic.

Throughout my more than 40-year career, I have always believed that medicine goes far beyond diagnoses and operating theatres. For me, the true driving forces behind this profession are empathy, communication with patients and the ability to explain each case clearly.

My vocation and approach to patient care

My approach is based on ensuring that patients understand what is happening, the causes of their visual problem and the possible consequences. I firmly believe that well-informed patients who understand their condition can take better care of themselves and approach treatment with greater confidence and peace of mind.

That is why, during each consultation, I take the time needed to explain every diagnosis in a clear, approachable and understandable way, always providing honest and personalised care.

Clinical Career and Experience

My vocation began at the University of Oviedo, where I graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1983 before going on to specialise in Ophthalmology.

Since then, I have worked in both public and private healthcare, gaining extensive clinical and surgical experience in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of a wide range of eye conditions.

Public Healthcare Experience

I worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist within INSALUD, and subsequently SESPA, from 1990 to 2024.

In addition, I had the honour of taking on the management and leadership of the Ophthalmology Department at Hospital del Oriente de Asturias, serving as Head of Department from March 2015 to January 2024.

International Specialisation

As part of my training, I specialised in Refractive Surgery at the renowned Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Institute in Moscow, one of the pioneering institutions and world leaders in this field.

This experience broadened my perspective on Ophthalmology and introduced me to advanced eye surgery techniques, always with the aim of providing my patients with more precise and safer care.

Private Practice and Clinical Leadership

I combined my public-sector work with clinical management in private practice. I worked as a Consultant and Manager at Noroftalmic Refractive Surgery Clinic in Gijón.

I am also the Founder and Managing Director of Clínicas Oftalmológicas Asturianas S.A., based at Centro Oftalmológico del Llano in Gijón, a project I launched in 1993 and continue to lead today.

Medical Societies and Continuing Professional Development

To provide safe, up-to-date, high-quality care, I believe it is essential to maintain continuous professional development and remain connected with the leading medical societies in the field.

Since January 1993, I have been an active member of leading Ophthalmology organisations in Spain, including:

Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (SEO).
Spanish Society of Implant-Refractive Ocular Surgery (SECOIR).
