Professional Profile of Teresa

Biography of Teresa

Hello and welcome. I am Dr Teresa Lupión, an Ophthalmologist specialising in Oculoplastic Surgery orbital conditions and lacrimal disorders. I would like to tell you a little more about my career and my approach to patient care.

Medicine is my vocation, and my practice focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the eyelids, orbit and lacrimal system, as well as reconstructive and cosmetic periocular surgery. Among other conditions, I treat drooping eyelids, under-eye bags, patients seeking blepharoplasty, watery eyes, eyelid tumours, orbital disorders, facial palsy and cases requiring periocular reconstruction.

My vocation and approach to patient care

Ophthalmology has always been my passion. My enthusiasm for helping people remains as strong as when I began my career. In my consultations, I prioritise warm, honest and personalised care, based on listening carefully, explaining things clearly and finding the best solution for each patient.

I believe it is essential that you understand your condition, the options available and what to expect from each treatment. This helps you make informed decisions and feel supported throughout your care.

Education and professional career

I completed my specialist training in Ophthalmology at Hospital Civil de Málaga and subsequently worked as a consultant Ophthalmologist at Hospital Universitario de Basurto in Bilbao.

My interest in Oculoplastic Surgery led me to broaden my international training with an observership at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin, followed by two advanced fellowships in the United Kingdom: one at James Cook University Hospital and another at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

International experience in Oculoplastic Surgery

After completing this training, I worked for four years as a Consultant in Oculoplastic Surgery at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, within the NHS. During this time, I gained extensive clinical and surgical experience in eyelid, orbital and lacrimal conditions, while also contributing to the training of residents and fellows.

I was also part of the Facial Palsy and Skull Base Units, working closely with specialists in ENT, Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Facial Rehabilitation.

Areas of expertise

My work covers both functional and cosmetic concerns affecting the area around the eyes. I treat conditions including ptosis, entropion, ectropion, eyelid laxity, lagophthalmos, eyelid tumours and lesions, eyelash disorders, blocked tear ducts, watery eyes, thyroid eye disease, facial palsy and complications associated with ocular prostheses.

In cosmetic practice, I perform procedures including upper and lower blepharoplasty, surgery for under-eye bags, brow lifts and eye-area rejuvenation, always with a medical, realistic and personalised approach.

Current practice

I currently see patients at Centro Oftalmológico del Llano in Gijón and at IOBA, the Institute of Applied Ophthalmobiology at the University of Valladolid. I consult in both Spanish and English.

My commitment to patients

My goal is to provide you with the best possible care and support you throughout the process in a warm, honest and professional way. I want you to understand your condition, feel heard and have the reassurance that you are making decisions with all the information you need.

“My commitment is to treat every patient as I would want myself or my own family to be treated.”

Teresa will see you at Centro Oftalmológico del Llano
